Checking out something new or "foreign" to
one's way of thinking or perceiving things always brings
with it a risk that someone can develop misconceptions
about it. This is true of many things, and the anime
movement is no exception. For years, as the anime medium
continues to work its way into other cultures, anime
fans have been fighting the stereotypes that seem to
crop up from people outside of the fandom, or at the
edge of it. While this has become easier in recent years
with the slow but sure integration of anime into the
mainstream, anime fans and potential anime fans are
still dealing with the common stigmas that are attributed
to the medium. These stereotypes may serve to discourage
people from accepting anime for what it is, or developing
bad perceptions of it and its fans.
Worry
no more, though, because Frank is prepared with a small
quick and dirty tutorial on some of the most commonly
perceived stereotypes of anime by non-anime watchers.
Whether you are a veteran of the anime movement or someone
looking to take the anime plunge for the first time,
this class will help you understand exactly what are
the common misconceptions of anime, and also how to
counteract them (in kind, non-flammatory ways, of course).
You'll see what may be some of the most common "turn-offs"
for people that are not anime fans watching, and see
why they may think the way they do. We hope that with
these stereotypes on your mind, you (and your potential
anime fan friends) will be better educated and prepared
to deal with them the next time you watch your favorite
anime series.
