Overview

Even in stereotypes of anime and manga, the term "mecha", used most commonly to refer to giant mechanical devices of all kinds, is well known. The idea of mecha has almost always been a part of Japanese animation, and it has evolved into one of its biggest mainstays. But what inspired designers to begin to create giant robots and machines that would become popularized? How did mecha evolve from its humble beginnings into a subgenre of anime in and of itself?

Frank answers all these questions as he takes you through a step by step history of one of anime fans' most beloved standards. From the super hero robots like Voltron, to a certain series of "Mobile Suits", to a window into the human soul, we'll take a look at it all. Mecha is definitely more than just "giant robots beating each other up", and after this course, you'll have a better understanding and appreciation of just how mecha fits into many of the anime series that we know and love.
